This is a hard decision. As has been mentioned, the stage production/musical is very different that the original novel. For the former, I would of course say Erik, the latter not so much.

The only thing that bothers me about choosing Erik (from the movie) is this : We are told that Christine came to the opera house to live at 7 years old. Shortly after the Angel of Music started coming to her. Now, the movie is based on Christine at 16, so for the last 9 years, would she not have grown to love this angel as a father figure, since she believed it was either her father or an angel sent by her father. I don't care about the age difference, I just think it would be strange after that relationship to go from parental to lover.

According the 2004 film, Christine had issues with the men in her life, her father who died; the Phantom who seemed to take his place, but upon seeing him, the awakening of a woman; and lastly poor Raoul as the childhood sweetheart.

The Phantom for the most part had taken the roles both her father and Raoul and filled at one time. Naturally Raoul wanted more than a sweetheart, and so did the Phantom. Realizing her Angel was no spirit but a flesh and blood man who not only had feelings for her, but her for him; this caused a great turmoil within this 16 year old girl. How does she really feel about this man who allowed her to believe he was the Angel of Music? Is he still like a father to her, or can she now look upon him as a virile man who is acutally in love with her?

Perhaps we see more clearly than Christine, because we are not caught in the web. This young girl has to make a choice between two men who equally love her enough to die for her. Yes, she may have felt like a daughter to the Phantom at one point, but at her age, it was easy to be terribly confused. Who would you chose? Then Phantom or Raoul?

As for me, the movie version, I would choose the phantom. Yes, he's still a little off his rocker, but that scene at the end, where he's holding the music box singing Masquerade, then she returns the ring, just breaks my heart. He has loved her for years. Yes, her and Raoul were childhood sweethearts (before the age of 7!) and he was only back in the picture very shortly. Phantom all the way. I just read the short story by Suzy Mckee Charnas called Beauty and the Opera or the Phantom Beast, where Christine marries the phantom and lives with him for 5 years. And for the most part, I thought it was wonderful!

As for the novel, I'm not quite half way through. So far, this phantom is terrifying, and he murders people much more frequently than the movie. I know this book is very different than the movie, so I can't comment yet on which one I would choose. I'll answer that one later

What are you talking about? He didn't murder anyone. It says from the original novel in red letters on the first post. Also, "the phantom's" name is Erik.

Gabby81 thank you for your thoughts and the heads up on the book Beauty and the Opera or the Phantom Beast. I don't think I've heard of that one. When you have completed, open up a thread for it and give us a review. In the meantime, I will see if I can find it on Amazon.com.

Thanks Phantonessfay! I got the name from a facebook group. You can visit the writers website, but you have to purchase the ebook to read it. (there may be other ways, but for $3 I didn't care). It's a short novel, about 74 pages. I read it yesterday. I will it again, and will start a new topic on it and review it. It was actually a good story!

I see you can buy it on a site callef fictionwise.com. The price is right. Did you have to buy a special device to read it? For some ebooks you do.

I think I would have chosen Erik .

Here are my explanations:

1) There is something magical about him, no wait, he is magical! He transforms music into something so wonderful that when you listen to it you can feel yourself being transported into a whole new world; one in which there is hope, joy and love. He can make dreams out of nightmares, he is the master of the night, the master of illusions.

2) He is a passionated human being. He loves his art and respects it the same way I respect writing. I think we would be able to understand each other's passions very easily.

3) I know there is light in his heart and I believe in him, in his humanity. I know he could be a wonderful person if he was given the chance to and I would love to be with him to give him this chance; to show him that there is always hope, even in the darkness.

Brava! Wow! That was beautiful! Anyone who ever thought about Raoul will never do so again.

I'm a member of Team Erik. Because a mysterious man living in the basement of an opera house wearing a mask is a hell of a lot more believable than sparkling vampires.

That was cute, but really had nothing to do with the discussion.

I've also changed my decision (AGAIN!). I agree with WonderingGirl, Erik seemed very dangerous and unpredictable. Christine was in love with Raoul, who was rich, handsome, and charming. Erik then kidnaps her, forces her to live with him, and frightens her to the point she attempts suicide. I would not choose to spend my life with Erik.... I might help him get therapy, though.

But Raoul is not a vampire who sparkles. He was a human being who had sincere feelings for Christine. The same goes for Erik. Judging by the image you get from Leroux, who would you choose?
