| Well, half is better than I thought it would be. Sorry the next one was so hard for you to post, but it looks fine to me A - 3 - right or wrong B - 4 - friend or Phantom C - 2 - no more silent tears D - 1 - I am there inside E - 3 - in dreams he came F - 2 - Andre and Firmin in Notes/Prima Donna G - 2+4...I think this is actually sung by both Christine and the Phantom H - 4 - Christine in Think of me I - 1 - Margaret Preece J - none are right....in 2005 Gerard was 36, Patrick was 32 and Emmy 19 K - 2 - Miranda Richardson L - 1 - leaves the opera to start a family with Raoul I think J was just a typo, but I'm pretty sure G is sung by both at the same time. I also checked in the companion book, and it says the same. I love these quizzes. Especially when I can actually answer them. I wish I was going to see the stage performance with you. That would be so awesome! | |

| Brava! You only missed one.
G. 3. Christine in "Wandering Child". It was a duet, but the line "Yet the soul obeys!" was sung by Christine.
You are good.
***************************** I'm not making this multiple choice. Let's see how you do with this fill-in-the-blank questions.
1. Where did much of the scene for "Angel of Music" (with Christine and Meg) take place?
2. What breed of dog did Carlotta own?
3. Raoul and the Phantom have a sword fight in the movie directly after what song?
4. Which actor did not do their own singing for their character?
5. Whose part was NOT cut in the transition from musical to movie?
6. What color is the horse the Phantom uses in the cemetery? Black or White?
7. What does the Phantom have Mme Giry give to Christine after the gala?
8. Who brought Christine to the Opera Populaire?
9. During the transition from "Notes" to "Prima Donna", what does a member of the crowd ask of Carlotta?
10. Did anyone (besides Christine) notice that the Phantom had taken Piangi's place for "Point of No Return"?

| You say G is from "All I ask of you"? I'm confused. I don't recall that in the song. I thought it was in the graveyard as Christine approaches her fathers grave in the duet with the Phantom | |

| Here goes nothing..... 1 - in the chapel 2 - poodle 3 - Wandering Child 4 - Minnie Driver 5 - no idea...gonna say Meg 6 - 2 black horses pull carriage the Phantom rode in on, Raoul had the white horse 7 - a red rose tied with a black ribbon 8 - Mme Giry 9 - "Could you please give this rose to Miss Daae?" 10 - This is tricky......I think that the little person noticed quickly, and maybe Passarino (or whatever his name is). Mme Giry notices shortly after, and Raoul realizes soon after that. Eventually all the main characters are aware (and really, how could they not?) | |

| You both did very well.
The ones you both had trouble with were # 8, 12, and 13.
Here are the answers:
8. 9 times The Phantom speaks, not sings, nine times.
12. . Yes, it’s such a sad and beautiful love story. But I think Christine should have stayed with the Phantom because he loves her more than Raoul!
13. Yes! ERIK IS THE BEST!
Therefore, Gabby81 missed one and snowmoccasin missed three. Brava! Good job!

| I can see these quizzes are no challenge to you. So this time no quiz, since you know all there is to know about Phantom.
From the 2004 film or even the stage production, let's talk about the papier mâché musical box, in the shape of a barrel-organ; attached, the figure of a monkey in Persian robes playing the cymbals.
Immediately I see a few reasons the monkey is there. Actually we see two monkeys with cymbals, once at the gypsy camp when the Phantom was a nine year old captive and again as an adult. We see the latter at the beginning of the film, when Christine awakens after "Music of the Night" and finally at the end of the film just before Christine gives the Phantom the ring. Having said all this, what purpose the music box with the monkey serve? Why is it significant?

| You know how I feel about the monkey music box. Having to leave mine in Florida is killing me. I can't say that anything is coming to me about the monkey itself, but I find the fact that it plays masquerade is so appropriate, as we see in the last scene while the Phantom is singing along. Masquerade would be a place where even he could be accepted by the world, as no one would see his face and be afraid of him. The only thing about the monkey is that monkeys are often thought of as fun, or funny. Perhaps as a child, the only joy the Phantom got was of watching the little monkeys? | |

| First off, why did you have to leave your monkey in Florida? No room in you luggage?
You've touched on some good points. Monkeys may be fun, and in this case, this one took him to a place of peace and happiness, as the masquerade indicated he could hide his face behind a different mask.
As a child, he found comfort in the monkey when the gypsy beat him and then after he eliminated the gypsy.
As an adult we see him seeking comfort of the monkey again when Christine leave with Raoul.
But then, we haven't mentioned that Raoul sought comfort in buying it to place on the grave of his beloved wife. We saw him buy it in the beginning and then give it to her in the end. Indeed, the Phantom would haunt them to their graves.
***************************************************** Let's go to the ring. Obviously its design makes us think of eternity, being without end, timeless, repetitive and unbroken.
The ring symbolizes possession as well. In this case, the Phantom is saying he possesses Christine and she is not available to any man, just as a man would say of his wife. This is reflected in the novel as well. From this introduction, how does the ring make a full circle in the story without ever being used for its intended purpose?

| I left my monkey in Florida because I was afraid it would get broken during the flights. Mom and dad will be driving back in April, so it will be much safer. Perhaps I am wrong about this, but I don't believe that Raoul ever saw the music box. Christine must have described it in extreme detail for him to have recognized it and wanted it so badly. I'm a little surprised that Christine would have described this with such detail. She probably wouldn't have paid that much attention to it when she woke after "Music of the Night", so she would have described it in the final scene, when she returns the ring. Nice lead on to the ring. This is something that has bothered me endlessly. I can't refer to the book right now, because my memory of that section is hidden, but in the movie, we see the Phantom give Christine the same ring that Raoul gave her. I know that the Phantom can't go out shopping for his own ring, and he likely gave it to her for lack of another ring. But I find it hard to believe that he could put aside his great hatred for Raoul and give Christine that same ring. It is interesting how at the end, both symbols are returned to Christine. | |

| In the novel Erik gives Christine a gold band, which historically indicates the bridegrooms trusts his betroth with such a treasure and will bring them good luck.
Remember Erik tells Christine, "On condition that this ring is always on your finger. As long as you keep it, you will be protected against all danger and Erik will remain your friend." When Raoul sees the ring he knows it signifies the Phantom's possession of her as his future wife. Christine loses the ring. When the Phantom releases her, he gives her the ring back as a wedding gift. "I held in my hand a ring, a plain gold ring which I had given her ...which she had lost...and which I had found again... a wedding ring, you know....I slipped it into her little hand and said, `There!...Take it!...Take it for you...and him! ...It shall be my wedding present, a present from your poor, unhappy Erik." At his request upon his death, she returns to Erik to place the plain gold ring back on his finger. The ring has made a full circle.
In the 2004 film, it's a little different. Raoul gives Christine an diamond engagement ring, symbol of not only his eternal love, but his social standing. It marks her as his. At seeing this, the Phantom rips it from her neck, therefore stealing the ring as he plots to steal Christine.
After making her choice to save Raoul, Christine puts on the ring to show her agreement to be the Phantom's wife. Knowing she would never love him as he wants to be loved, and realizing he had nothing to offer compared to the Vicomte, he lets her and Raoul go. She only gives it back to him to sever all ties and thoughts of her belonging to him, even if the ring originally came from Raoul
Here again the ring as come full circle without ever being used for its intended purpose, to bind them for eternity. At the end of the film, the Phantom places a red rose with a black ribbon tied around its stem along with the ring. Why? Perhaps, it was his way of saying 'you still belong to me forever'!
Can you think of more to add?

| Thanks for reminding me about the novel. These these treatments frustrate me so. I'll have to read the book again, but right now I'm reading the Chronicles of Narnia. So, I don't think there is much more that can be said about the ring. Something I am curious about is the ribbon. Why a black silk ribbon tied around the red rose? Mme Giry knew that this was a sign of the Phantom's. Tell me, how did Erik communicate with Christine in the novel? Or did he? The colour of the ribbon can obviously represent darkness, evil. Is the satin ribbon to show the sensitive side of the Phantom? Just an interesting thought | |

| If I may digress back to the monkey for a moment. Leroux mentions, via the Persian's perspective, that Erik behaved much like a monkey; that one scene with Erik in the boat, I believe he has just had a run in with the Persian when his antics display the comical, playful twisting of circumstances. Monkeys are very capable of changing temperament on a dime, good to bad ... games crossing reality. And what of their tendency toward 'what's mine is mine'? Possession is a huge motivator for realizing dependency upon another. Just another angle.
I'm one for simplicity. What if the ribbon depicts elegance, the rising to a different plane. Showing contrast between beauty and blackness where nothing has specific form or the living world above and vast nothingness below are other options.
The ring. Your full circle explanation is one I like, Fay. It makes me wonder how much thought is actually given to the use of certain props. Listening to commentaries at the end of movies has often provided insights to the director's reasoning behind color, location, action, and possessions. And then the fans go deeper!

| Angelmasque so happy to see you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I do agree with you. Here is the scene you described where Erik acted comical: "Yes, I promise you," I replied, without hesitation, for I felt convinced that for such a monster the proof was impossible.
"Well, then, it's quite simple....Christine Daae shall leave this as she pleases and come back again!...Yes, come back again, because she wishes...come back of herself, because she loves me for myself!..."
"Oh, I doubt if she will come back!...But it is your duty to let her go." "My duty, you great booby!...It is my wish... my wish to let her go; and she will come back again...for she loves me!...All this will end in a marriage...a marriage at the Madeleine, you great booby! Do you believe me now? When I tell you that my nuptial mass is written...wait till you hear the KYRIE. ..."
He beat time with his heels on the planks of the boat and sang:
"KYRIE!...KYRIE!...KYRIE ELEISON!...Wait till you hear, wait till you hear that mass."
"Look here," I said. "I shall believe you if I see Christine Daae come out of the house on the lake and go back to it of her own accord."Actually this would appear humorous to see Erik beat time with his heels to keep time with his singing. Never thought about the ribbon. Good point. ******************************* Here one I don't think anyone has thought about. The Phantom himself is a symbol. What does he represent?
