| I was doing some re-reading earlier, and I across something in the book about Erik wearing a false nose to go into town. (I can't find it just yet) So as far as I can tell, the only thing wrong with him was he did have a nose, had sunken eyes, and he was very thin. Though I'm sure this would have been pretty horriable in that time period, considering they didn't grow up watching disgusting things on television all day long. We totally should make a PotO resaech group!!! | |

| According to Leroux's Erik, he had a mask that would make him look normal. His skin looked like yellow parchment over a skull; having no visable nose and his eyes sank so far into the sockets it looked like he didn't have any. In essence, he looked like a skull with decayed skin. For this reason the gypsies called him "a living corpse". This is pretty horrific. Nowadays, we are used to seeing scary, horrible things on film. Believe me, seeing Erik was not a walk in the park. His looks would scare the hair off a brass monkey.

| I don't really think I would mind his appearence too much, but his personality was seriously damaged. | |

| Ok, so I've finished the book, and now I have a question. The first time Erik removed his mask (which I believe was black silk), she describe the horror that she saw. Obsiously whatever is wrong with him (be it a deformity or disease) has been there for his entire life. Now, my question is, where does the death's head fit it? Is this another mask for him to were out in "public"? I thought I'd also read that he had a mask ready for when they would live above ground, that would make him appear more "normal". I can tell you I'll be reading this again, cause there's just so much information to take in | |

| The death's head Erik wore most of the time. The mask to make him look like other men was what he told Christine he had. Whether he told her that to convince her to stay with him or it was true, we have to speculate.
Yes, the deformity was with him from birth. | |
