A Death's Head

For those of us who have read Leroux's Novel, we know Christine/Leroux describes Erik in this way: "But imagine, if you can, Red Death's mask suddenly
coming to life in order to express, with the four black holes of its eyes,
its nose, and its mouth, the extreme anger, the mighty fury of a demon;
AND NOT A RAY OF LIGHT FROM THE SOCKETS, for, as I learned later,
you can not see his blazing eyes except in the dark."

I was reminded of this quote when I read something in a new forum (Erik: Is he for real!??!) about Erik possibly having a disease. Well, no one knows for sure do they? What do you think? Did Erik have a disease, or was he just deformed? Explain why you think so.

I think he had a deasese cuz his head was skelital and the no nose thing
you never see that kind of birth defect
(unless the mother was taking LSD during the pregnancy)

Actually, there are all kinds of birth defects that you would think impossible... I think what Leroux meant by Erik's head being "skeletal" is he was gaunt. I've actually seen someone whose face was sunken, it was disturbing. I am torn on this matter, I'll do further research and post back here!!

Well, I did read somewhere that Leroux knew Erik had a disease and even knew the name of it Exclamation

This information could very well be false, however.

I think what happened was that Erik's Skin and cartilage in his nose never fully developed leaving him with no nose and very thin skin. *goes to hug Erik cause I feel sorry for him now*

I do too.

I was very depressed after reading the book and found out it could possibly be true. I agree with your theory, his mother could have been exposed to chemicals or been a heavy drinker while impregnated with him. But who knows, it could have just been one of the things that happens in nature sometimes.
