| I love that it is not a simple story. It is not girl meets boy, they fall in love, bad guy tries to hurt one/both, they beat him in the end, they live happily ever after.
Though most of the other characters may be rather simplistic, Erik is far from being a black and white character. He does not slide neatly into a slot reading: "True villian", "Misunderstood hero", or "Poor, sweet hearted monster". He has all of it in him and he's a complex character that it takes time to understand and know.
I've found that to be rare.
Add to that the style of the writing, the uniqueness (at least for the time it was written in) of the story, and the array of odd characters and you have a down-right entertaining book.
The first time I read the story, I couldn't stop laughing at the Safety-Pin chapters. The second time I marveled at the rat catcher, Persian, and Mme. Giry. It's the sort of story where there's always something else to be found and hold you even when you have it nearly memorized.

| I don't want to bring up the whole "truth aspect" of it, but i think that might have something to do with why I like it so much, but I love how it's so full of emotion. I don't/can't love one particular thing about the book and never understood why my friend found it boring. | |

| I agree, I loved the story from the start. No matter how much anyone tries, they won't be able to create anything as extravagant as this. | |

| For me, ever since I read the book I was hooked, but especially so after watching the ALW movie. Everything that has been said I agree with. For me, the aspect that really reached out and grabbed me was the fact that he, despite his incredible gifts, is rejected mainly because of a physical deformity. In my life, I have had many instances with my own family where they reject me for equally surfacy (no, that's not a word!) reasons. My heart and soul went out to Erik for I could relate to him in that way. Of course, there are many, many other reasons I love Phantom. His sensuality, his musical genius, his passion, etc. etc. etc. I could go on forever! | |

| I think what draws me to Phantom of the Opera is Erik finding acceptance and love in the world. Becuase in the end isn't that what we all want in life? Love and acceptance. I feel as though I can relate to Eriks yearning for love and normalicy becuase I have my own deformity. Outside where all the world can see it and stare at it , makes me wish i could live underneath and Opera away from the cruelty of our world. I'm afraid we are no more accepting of derformities a now as we were then. Call me a cynic but thats how it feels out there. | |

| I don't know why I like it. I just sort of...do.*shrugs* It's a beautiful story, and I'm a quiet person who doesn't like being around a lot of people. I kind of relate to Erik because of that, and we both have a sort of dry sense of humor(though I'd never kill someone; quite the contrary, I typically let people walk all over me as opposed to sticking up for myself. Bad habit, I know. ) | |

| God only knows why I love everything Phantom. I think YestonErik is right about relating to Erik. We can all relate to Erik on some level. It may also be because it's another classic tale of Beauty and the Beast. | |

| I love it because it's not the stereotypical "happy ending" story...I like how we feel pity and compassion for Erik, the so-called "bad-guy" of the story. I like how Christine's choice really was not easy for her and she learned, unlike so many other "heroines", that the ugly and 'terrifying' man isn't always the bad one! Personally, Phantom taught me a lot about myself and how I treat others. I learned that you have to look deeper than a person's face when you are getting to know them. The most beautiful person can be the most cruel and unlikeable...the ugliest person can be the most beautiful and have the most to offer. As my chemistry teacher once said to me, "The most beautiful girl can walk into a room, open her mouth, then turn into the ugliest...the most un-attractive girl can walk into a room, open her mouth, and become the most beautiful." All in all it's just a beautiful romance filled with tragedy...it breaks your heart and leaves you wanting more of it's mystery and allure. It will be part of my life forever. | |

| I agree with you. AngelofMusic1413! That story will ALWAYS be apart of my life! *That's my story, and i'm stickin' to it!* But. I also love Phantom, first, because it teaches me not to judge a "book" by it's cover..and, Phantom taught me about how I treat others...like AngelofMusic1413 said...and, it's a mix of mystery, tragedy, love, and, yes..horror..all in one! Phantom is just one story, that NO-One can beat! plus, the character are so vivid, they threaten to jump out of the book into your living room! (sweet!) ....And, that is absolutely true about the prettiest girl being "ulgy" because or her personality, and how the unattractive girl being beutiful because of her personality.. | |

| Why I love Phantom: by La Chica 1. Lereoux created an amazingly complex character in Erik. He's the bad guy for cryin' out loud, and you just want him to WIN. 2. Erik can sing, he had a voice that could only be described as angelic. That alone does things to me. 3. It takes place in the past, making it a piece of historical fiction. (Okay, maybe I'm stretching, but one can learn at thing or two from reading this.) 4. It take place in Paris, France. After NY, that's a pretty wonderful place to live. (Can you imagine Erik speaking in French? *swoons for two seconds* Must get my hands on the French novel.) 5. The musical is amazing! I cry when I listen to "Music of the Night". And I've heard it in several languages. 6. You can retell the story in a million billion fanfics and never get tired. | |

| Well if Just because is not a good answer then I totaly agree with YestonErik and AngelicRose. That we do have a sort of connection with Erik, I Think that my connetion is to do with me being bullied and rejected when i was in elementry school and some of middel school.
I read on another site they were talking about this too, one person said that they think that the people that have a very strong connection with Erik have had Emotional Trama in there life. but thats just his opinon. For whatever reason it is we all have a special connection with the phantom!! And proud of it!!!!!!!!!!
