What are you favorite quotes from Leroux's novel?

Here are two of mine: "At that moment, we were just in front of the high altar; and the moonbeams fell straight upon us through the stained-glass windows of the apse. As I did not let go of the cloak, the shadow turned round; and I saw a terrible death's head, which darted a look at me from a pair of scorching eyes. I felt as if I were face to face with Satan; and, in the presence of this unearthly apparition, my heart gave way, my courage failed me...and I remember nothing more until I recovered consciousness at the Setting Sun." I like this creepy description of Erik--it still sends shivers down my spine!

And this one: "At last, Jammes, flinging herself upon the farthest corner of the wall, with every mark of real terror on her face, whispered: "Listen!" Everybody seemed to hear a rustling outside the door. There was no sound of footsteps. It was like light silk sliding over a panel. Then it stopped." Ghostly! I love it!

"Don't touch me! I am Red Death Stalking abroad!"

One of my favorites is when Erik tells Christine, "I'm still your faithful dog, ready to die for you." It's heartbreaking how much he loves her, but can't be with her.

one of my favorites is "oh, you're not dead yet? well try to keep quiet!"
or something like that.

Here's another, "Oh, the first time I saw him...I thought he was going to die."

"Why? Because I'd seen him."

So sad!

The whole "Poor Unhappy Erik" speech, really. I love the whole book to bits.

One of my favorite quotes is:

Here's one that made me laugh:
"Ah, yes, the chandelier...I can tell you. I didn't make the chandelier fall. It was badly worn."

From his shoulders hung an immense red-velvet cloak, which trailed

I love that one too! Though for some strange reason, I can't help but laugh whenever I read it.

You're right. It can be funny. Can you imagine the Phantom all in read with a white death's head and a plumed hat and those words embroidered on his cloak? Not only flamboyant, but a bit over the edge.

Yes, that's part of the reason I love the book, there's some humor hidden in something so sad.

Here's a quote by Raoul as he and Christine flee Apollo's Lyre:

If we really saw Erik, what I ought to have done was to nail him

I love that whole "keep your hand at the level of your eyes'' part. Though I don't think something that simple would stop Erik
